How to choose an opener

Ceiling mount VS. wall mount

A ceiling mount is a common option for residences. Overhead doors work by using a motorized operating system which is mounted on the ceiling. Through the use of either a belt, chain or a screw-drive mechanism, the rail track and lift will open and close your garage door.

A ceiling mount has various of model available and is a sophisticated as well a cost effective option. Because of its central ceiling location, the camera becomes a popular optional function for it.

A wall mount, also known as a side mount or jackshaft opener, is typically found on either side of a garage door. This style is common in garages with high or irregularly shaped ceilings. Unlike the ceiling mount, this type of system is connected to and relies on the torsion bar to operate the garage door.

A wall mount is expensive but easier to maintain since they’re lower and more accessible, it also has higher reliability due to the direct drive of the torsion bar.

Typically, a 1/2 hp garage door opener can lift up to 300 pounds of weight without putting too much pressure on the motor. On the other hand, a 3/4 horsepower opener can lift a mighty 600lbs!

This tells us you should get a 3/4 hp garage door opener if your door is heavy or too large. Best for double doors.

The 1/2 hp door opener is more suitable for lighter, usually single garage doors. But it can still be used for some light double garage doors.

However, if your garage door is not maintained regularly, for example, doesn’t lubricate the hinge, roller or adjust the torsion spring, the door may become sticky, that will cause the opener generate more pull force to open the door. Your door opens and closes seeminlgy normally, but your opener is struggling to complete its job every time. If your opener is 1/2 hp, its life would reduce significantly due to high work load. In this circumstance, a 3/4 hp is much safer option because of its larger load capacity.

The 1/2 hp opener is competent but a little fragile and like to work with a well maintained garage door.

Backup Battery or not?

With a backup battery, you can open and close the door during a power outage. However, the battery is a Sealed Lead Acid, can only last 2 or 3 years. If your area doesn’t experience outage frquently, skip this option. Remember, even without the backup battery, you can still open and close the door manually. Use battery or not, it totally depends how often you will use it.

Belt, Chain or Screw?

Belt and chain drive have same strength and life. Chain drive is cheaper, but makes a little more noise. The belt drive is a bit faster than a Chain drive and doesn’t need maintenance or lubrication.

The screw drive uses a threaded rod to move the traveler, arm, and door. The unit is compact and delivers a lot of power to open doors quickly. It’s quieter than a chain-drive opener. The screw needs regular lubrication.
